New Yorkers Can't See the Oscars

Just after midnight on Sunday, 3 million Cablevision viewers in the New York area lost the ABC channel because of an impasse by the cable operator and broadcaster to resolve a feud over transmission fees.

If the argument is not settled between Cablevision and Walt Disney, the parent company of ABC, by the end of the day, viewers won't be able to see any of the Oscar coverage ABC has to offer as well as popular TV shows such as Lost and Good Morning America.

This breakdown in negotiations was the latest in a series between broadcasters and paid television providers. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has stayed on the sidelines during the negotiations, but some lawmakers and consumer groups have urged greater involvement by the FCC to prevent viewers from missing out.

Each of the companies published press releases Sunday morning, blaming the other for failing to reach an agreement. The companies did express that they were continuing the negotiations and are hoping to make an agreement.
